Watching the NFL draft is one of the best parts of the dynasty offseason. While tweeting and texting and giving my thoughts live on Twitter, I also wrote my initial thoughts as I watched:

  • It’s 7:52PM ET and I’ve never been so close to the start of the draft and known so little about who will be picked where. This is one of the most compelling draft TV in years
  • Seems to me there will be QBs picked too high tonight. Trubisky, Watson and Mahomes all have great traits but none are top 10 worthy. That won’t stop some QB needy teams from over-drafting them.
  • We’re 5 minutes in and already I’m Kiper is getting on my nerves
  • We’re off and Cleveland picks Myles Garrett. He’s going to be a 3-4 OLB and that isn’t traditionally a great place to rack up dynasty stats. That said, he is athletic and talented enough to be a solid IDP contributor. I wouldn’t take him before the third round in dynasty rookie drafts.
  • Wow, Chicago pulls the trigger to move up and they take Mitchell Trubisky. This is not a great place to go but certainly he will beat out Mike Glennon sooner or later. It may be later though and Chicago lost Alshon Jeffrey and will be run heavy next season. Trubisky is a 2nd round rookie pick IMO.
  • Solomon Thomas goes to the Niners in a mild surprise as they are QB needy. Thomas is a 3-4 DE and most likely won’t be all that fantasy relevant.
  • This is where the draft can be deceptive. I’m not suggesting Fournette will be bad, but Zeke was taken 4th last year and Fournette will not have that type of dynasty impact. You can drop TJ Yeldon and Chris Ivory if you have them.
  • WOW, Corey Davis is a big surprise at number 5 for the Titans. Marcus Mariotta just ticked up a bit in value. Davis will jump in my DMX score too, he was projected in the mid-first.
  • Twitter is now trending with a rumor that Cleveland is trying to trade #12 pick for Kirk Cousins. This, will be interesting.
  • Jets take Jamal Adams at 6th, with NFL lineage in his blood, he is a great IDP play. I think some people will take him in the second round in rookie drafts, I think that’s rich but a 3rd may not be.
  • We’re 6 picks in and my draft contest picks are completely blown.
  • Mike Williams goes to the Chargers and that is a fantastic place to land with a gun slinger like Philip Rivers in town. IMO, Williams could be the breakout rookie this year. This solidifies his top 7 status in rookie drafts, especially with Keenan Allen on the other side.
  • Carolina takes Christian McCaffrey and solidifies a meteoric draft rise this year. Carolina is looking to modify it’s offense and this is a great way to do it. Cam Newton gets better with this pick. Stewart and McCaffrey will share the load for a year or two and McCaffrey will end up being 1A to  future drafted 1B in Carolina.
  • Run on WRs, John Ross goes at #9 to Cincinnati.  Much like Will Fuller last year, Ross’s upside will be capped by the WR on the other side of the field, in this case AJ Green. That said, he’s a nice WR2. I’d say this puts his round one rookie draft status in jeopardy, this could make him a 2nd rounder due to where he fell.
  • KC Trades with Buffalo. This has to be Pat Mahomes. And it is. This is another one where he will most likely sit in year 1 and develop, but the waiting could be worth it in dynasty, this guy just looks like a winner. He’s a solid 2nd round pick in rookie drafts.
  • Marshon Lattimore goes to the Saints, the dynasty world shrugs
  • Texans trade to #12 with Cleveland to take Deshaun Watson. Watson could be the first rookie QB on the field this year and with Hopkins and Fuller in the fold, he’d have some great weapons. Dynasty wise this is a very nice place to land and could push him higher in rookie drafts.
  • With the Cardinals, Eagles, Colts and Ravens coming up in the next four picks, the draft is about to get defensive.
  • And indeed, the Cardinals take Haason Reddick. In a 3-4 defense he projects as an OLB which would limit his dynasty potential. If he ends up at ILB, he’s worth a third round rookie pick.
  • Derrick Barnett is the first 4-3 DE off the  board and that makes him pretty valuable in IDP leagues. I would take him early in the fourth round of rookie drafts. Third round if your IDP scoring is big.
  • Malik Hooker goes to the Colts and he may be the best safety even as the second off the board.
  • I told you it was getting defensive.
  • Marlon Humphrey at CB to Ravens, nothing to see her dynasty wise
  • Jonathan Allen goes to the Redskins as a 3-4 DE, not a traditional dynasty production position.
  • Now this is interesting. Adoree Jackson is a CB by trade, but he is a great athlete who got on the field at USC on offense too. If your IDP league has offensive points for defensive players (think JJ watt as a TE) then he may be worth a 3rd round pick.
  • OJ Howard is a perfect fit in Tampa. He will be a first round rookie pick no doubt in most drafts. He slid a bit but I LOVE where he landed.
  • Jarrad Davis is the first true MLB of the board and if you own Tahir Whitehead you might as well drop him. Davis will be a stud  and is worth a third round pick
  • Charles Harris is second 4-3 DE and while he will not start right away, he is worth a pick in rookie drafts
  • Evan Engram goes to NYG and is a no doubt Dynasty 2nd rounder. Interesting that he went before David Njoku here
  • CLE takes Jabrill Peppers and their defense is starting to look very scary
  • Takkarist McKinnley, where does he play at LB in ATL? MLB and WLB are taken, so he’s either an SLB which sucks for fantasy, or more than likely he moves to DE where he’d be very interesting for dynasty value
  • Taco Charlton gets to a 4-3 defense in Dallas. There are a to on of 4-3 DEs to choose from in this draft, I love i for IDP. Makes mid/late round picks valuable.
  • David Njoku goes to Cleveland as they trade up and take 3 picks in the first round. I hate where Njoku went but I love his skills. Unfortunately, he will wait a few years for a decent QB. Late second in my mind.
  • Steelers get TJ Watt who will be an OL in there 3-4 scheme. Solid pick for the Steelers, meh for fantasy.
  • SF trades up for Rueben Foster who fits into their 3-4 D as an ILB. He will be a starter right away and should thrive, although there’s is risk given his off field issues
  • NO trades into the first round to take a tackle. Nuff said.
