One of my favorite past time is picking up and streaming linebacker sleepers that develop or gain an opportunity mid-year. In the past I’ve been very successful with this strategy, picking up the likes of Paul Worrilow, Jelani Jenkins, Will Compton and several others. While it’s nice to get a stud LB in the rookie draft if you can get him, it’s not necessary to succeed in IDP leagues with big name LBs. Many no name LBs produce very good results for at least a period of time and if you’re paying close attention it can pay big dividends. With that lead in, here are 5 IDP linebackers that were not starters last year but could make hay this year. Most of which you can probably pick up off of waivers.
Will Compton, ILB WAS – Why not start with a guy with which I’m very familiar. Compton was undrafted out of Nebraska and has worked his way up the latter in DC. In spot duty Last year and 2014 he was very productive and now he’s expected to begin the year a starter. I doubt he’s a long term solution at ILB but this year is a prime year to hold him.
Keenan Robinson, MLB NYG – Compton took the WAS job from Robinson, who left in free agency and landed in a good situation in NYG. He’s not a long time solution either but if he wins the MLB job in training camp, he will be a solid starter to stream at the beginning of the year and either trade high for a pick or let go if he fades away.
Kiko Alonso, MLB MIA – Kiko has been off the radar for two years after a stellar rookie season was followed by a preseason ACL and basically two years of getting back his mojo. All signs from Miami are that he’s back and as good as ever. If that’s true, he’s a serious buy and hold, he’s still very young and could earn another contract in Miami.
Zach Orr, ILB BAL – Someone has to start next to CJ Mosley and the odds on favorite is Orr. I don’t think he’s a long term buy and hold but if he wins the job he can be very productive this year.
Christian Kirksey, ILB CLE – Kirksey shared time with Craig Robinson and Daryll Smith in previous years but with the Browns retooling he’s now the lead guy. This could be a breakout year for him.
Andrew Gachkar, MLB DAL – Someone has to play MLB for Dallas while Rolando McClain is suspended. My guess is that McClain has worn out his welcome and may be gone soon too, so whomever wins this job has a great chance to put up relevant IDP numbers in 2016. Gachkar is the odds on favorite and worth a buy and monitor.
